Escaped Cumberland County inmate captured in Maryland

  • News
An inmate who escaped in Cumberland County has been caught along with his father, who allegedly helped him. David Riley, 34, of Bridgeton, was found Saturday in Baltimore, Maryland, a day after he fled a prisoner transport van, State Police said. Riley was apprehended by U.S. Marshals at a bus terminal in the city. He was lodged in the Baltimore City detention center where he awaits extradition to New Jersey. Based on a cooperative investigation, investigators from the New Jersey State Police Fugitive Unit, Troop “A” Criminal Investigation Office, U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Regional Task Force, U.S. Marshals Capitol Area Regional Task Force, and Maryland State Police determined that Riley fled New Jersey to Baltimore after escaping from the custody of officers from the Cumberland County Department of Corrections. Riley was allegedly armed with a knife, although it was unclear how he got that. It was also unclear how he was able to get out of his restraints and escape the transport van before ditching his orange jumpsuit and escaping in just a T-shirt and boxers.

The man has an extensive criminal history in four states, including the 2009 kidnapping and rape of a woman, court records show. He was sentenced to six years for that crime. During the investigation, investigators determined that Riley’s father, 58-year-old David Carty, also of Bridgeton, drove him to Baltimore and bought him a bus ticket to Atlanta, Georgia. Troopers from the State Police Fugitive Unit and Troop “A” Criminal Investigation Office located and arrested Carty at a motel in Vineland. He was charged with hindering apprehension, obstruction of justice, and aiding another in an escape. He was lodged in Cumberland County Jail where he awaits a bail detention hearing.
