Firefighters were credited with keeping a fire from spreading to an Atlantic City apartment building Monday evening.
The fire began about 7 p.m. in the showroom next to the Lenox Cafe on Atlantic Avenue across from the Public Safety Building, acting Battalion Chief Kyle Pollock said.
Firefighters were at another call when the fire came in, but Engine 6 and Rescue 1 were able to quickly knock down the fire and keep it from spreading to the apartment building above, Pollock said.
The apartment building was evacuated as firefighters fought the blaze.
"If this would have came in at 4 in the morning, we probably would have lost the entire first floor," he said.
But the firefighters, many of them veterans, were able to work quickly, Pollock said.
"All of the companies on the scene did a great job," he said.
The fire was under investigation Monday night.
