An Atlantic City man is in jail after he allegedly assaulted a woman and an officer who tried to arrest him.
Police were called to the 2300 block of the Atlantic City Boardwalk for a robbery just before 4 p.m. Saturday, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
The victim, a 36-year-old woman, was approached by the suspect, put in a headlock and thrown to the ground, according to the report. He stole the victim’s cell phone and fled.
The suspect, identified as Eric Williams, was spotted about two blocks away by officers in the department's Surveillance Center.
Officer Joseph Kelly approached Williams, who immediately turned around, began to scream at Kelly and took a fighting stance, Fair said. Kelly tried to calm Williams, who turned and ran away, according to the report.
Williams ran into Boardwalk patrons about a block away, and fell.
As Kelly tried to arrest him, Williams allegedly began to punch the officer him in the face.
Williams was taken into custody with assistance from Officers Irwin Sanchez and Jeffrey Profitt, and a Caesars Hotel and Casino security guard, Fair said.
The victim’s phone was found in Williams’ pocket.
Kelly was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus, where he was treated and released for his injuries.
Williams, 50, was charged with robbery, simple assault, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice and disorderly conduct.
He was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
