Possible drowning victim found in Villas creek

  • News
Lower Township police are investigating the death of a man found in Cox Hall Creek. The death does not appear suspicious, police said. Police were called to the former Ponderlodge Golf Course in the Villas section at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday for a possible drowning. Three friends were swimming in the Cox Hall Creek Wildlife Management Area lake when one left, police were told. One of the two remaining swimmers then got out of the water but couldn't find his friend, identified as a 58-year-old white man. After a multi-agency search that included Town Bank Fire Department’s Dive Team, Villas Fire Department, Lower Township Rescue Squad and the Cape May County Sheriff’s Department K-9 unit, the body was found near the shoreline, police said. Due to obvious signs of death, no lifesaving measures were taken, police said. The cause of death has not yet been determined. The investigation is being conducted by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, the Cape May County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Lower Township Police Department. The death does not appear to be suspicious and there is no apparent danger to the public. Investigators are trying to find next of kin to make proper notification. Anyone with information is asked to call the Lower Township Police Department on their Tip Line at 609-886-1619, ext. 156.
