Vineland officer on paid leave after fatal shooting

  • News
A Vineland police officer is on paid administrative leave after a fatal shooting this weekend, Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae said. Rashaun Washington, 37, of Bridgeton, was shot after police were called to West Wood Street at 11:22 a.m. Saturday for the report of a man acting suspiciously on a front porch on the street between Boulevard and Fourth streets, Webb-McRae previously released. An encounter between the officers and man lasted several minutes, ending with the man fatally shot. Video posted on Facebook showed him stepping toward a police vehicle and then stepping backward several times. Then, the man runs past the vehicle and shots are heard. One officer's weapon was discharged in the incident, Webb-McRae said. She did not identify the officer, but says the he or she has been put on paid administrative leave Police Chief Rudolph Beu, in accordance with departmental policy.
