An Atlantic City man was fatally shot after he allegedly attacked an officer with a knife.
The officer, a five-year veteran of the department, was among police who responded to a hit-and-run with injuries on the 600 block of North Kentucky Avenue.
During the investigation, an uninvolved man, Timothy Deal, approached the scene and stabbed the officer in the torso with a knife, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said.
The attack was unprovoked, he said.

Deal, 32, was then shot by the officer, whose name has not been released, "ending the attack," according to the report.
Both were taken to the Trauma Center at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, where Deal was later pronounced dead.
The officer was treated and released.
Family and friends of Deal expressed disbelief that Deal would attack an officer, and questioned what authorities say happened.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit is investigating without the participation of the Atlantic City Police Department, as per New Jersey Attorney General Guidelines.
