A Mays Landing man was ordered detained Tuesday in a shooting that killed one man and wounded several others.
Matthew Gonzalez, 27, is charged with murder, attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault in the Sept. 24 shooting during a fight at the Brandywood Apartment Complex in Hamilton Township, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said.
Police were called to the scene at about 5:30 p.m., for the report of shots fired and several victims.
Taufeeq Mitchell, 31, who grew up in Atlantic City’s Venice Park, was rushed to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus, where he was pronounced dead.
Gonzalez is charged with attempted murder in the shooting of Laquine Demby. He also faces aggravated assault charges for wounding Glynda Newman and Tyjuan O’Neal.
"The defendant clearly poses a risk of danger for the surviving victims," Superior Court Judge Bernard DeLury said in making his ruling. "He is a great danger to others in the community."
Gonzalez also has pending drug and resisting arrest cases, and already was being detained before Tuesday's hearing.
The investigation was a cooperative effort between the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Hamilton Township Police Department. The Egg Harbor City Police Department and the New Jersey State Police also responded to the scene.
