Several New Jersey State Troopers rescued a man who was stuck waist deep in frigid water in a marshy area on the side of the New Jersey Turnpike in Elizabeth.
Trooper Victor Rios stopped to help a man standing next to his car on the right shoulder of the turnpike northbound in the area of milepost 102.3 at about 4:45 a.m. Saturday.
The driver told
Rios that his cousin got stuck in the swamp after he tried to walk through the marsh to rescue a friend whose car was stuck on the other side. The man’s feet became entrenched in the mud and he was unable to move, according to the report.
0Trooper Reinaldo Cruz arrived a short time later to assist.
Both troopers tried to use a large branch but the man was too weak to hold onto the limb and lost his grip.
Several more troopers arrived and helped in the recovery effort by creating a human chain, but that didn't work because the man was so far out.
As the victim began to show signs of hypothermia, Trooper Renato Antunese got a lifeguard rescue apparatus from his car, which allowed them to use a floatation device to pull the man to safety.
Elizabeth Fire Department and EMS arrived on scene and evaluated the victim. He was later transported to Trinitas Hospital where he was treated and released.
