An Atlantic City rapper was able to get the gun used to shoot him away from his attacker before rushing himself to the hospital, according to information released in court Monday.
Cory Wilburn, 30, was ordered held pending trial in the Feb. 19 shooting of Muhammad Griffin.
It was the second time in just more than a month that Superior Court Judge John Rauh detained Wilburn, who is serving a 180-day sentence in a simple assault that he pleaded guilty to on March 8.
Wilburn wasn’t charged with Griffin’s shooting until March 14, after a confidential informant told State Police that the shooter was known as Crakk Blockz, the name Wilburn goes by on the street - and on Facebook.
Griffin, 30, showed up at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus just moments after ShotSpotter alerted police to a single gunshot in the 1700 block of Atlantic Avenue, according to the charges read by Rauh.
Griffin said he had stopped at the store to get chips and said something to a man standing there then got into his car. That is when the suspect - a friend of the unnamed man Griffin spoke to - came to the car window and shot Griffin, the charges allege.
There was also a female witness in the passenger seat.
Griffin told police he took the weapon from the suspect.
Video surveillance from the area matches what 1700 block of Atlantic Avenue matches the witness accounts.
Wilburn had the highest possible score on his public safety assessment, with sixes for both likelihood to commit a crime and failure to appear. He also has a flag for violent activity, the judge said.
He was on drug court at the time of the shooting.
He is charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
Wilburn is due back in court April 11.
