An Atlantic City man was arrested Thursday after he tried to walk away from a car stop and was found to have 172 grams of marijuana in his car, police said.
When Officers Christian Ivanov and Daniel Arra stopped the car at about 1:40 p.m. in the 300 block of North Carolina Avenue, driver Robert Coppin Jr. got out of the car and started to walk away, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
Coppin was ordered to get back in the vehicle, but refused and began to yell at the officers, according to the report.
The officers were trying to de-escalate the situation, when they detected the overwhelming smell of unburnt marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, Fair said
Coppin continued to yell, drawing a crowd, according to the report.
Inside the car, the officers found a bag with 172 grams of marijuana . Coppin was also wanted on a warrant.
Coppin Jr., 47, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession with intent to distribute, possession within 500 feet of a park, possession within a school zone, and several motor vehicle summonses.
He was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
