A Mays Landing man is charged with assault by auto and drunken-driving after seriously injuring a Hamilton Township officer in a crash earlier this month.
Officer Leo Rudolph's car was struck just after 10 p.m. March 2, as he diverted traffic from Route 322 to Route 50 for downed wires.
Isaiah Rasul Muhammad Smith, 22, was heading west on Route 322, when he failed to yield to Rudolph's emergency lights and directions, and crashed into the front of the patrol car, police said.
Rudolph was seriously injured and taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Smith, who was not injured, was charged with driving while intoxicated.

On Wednesday, he was additionally charged with third-degree assault by auto and possession of marijuana.
The charges were placed on a summons, and Smith was transported back to the Atlantic County Justice Facility, where he is lodged on unrelated charges.
