Atlantic City man indicted for reckless manslaughter in fatal shooting

  • News

Two Atlantic City men have been indicted in connection with a fatal shooting from March.
Howard Cassell, 30, is accused of shooting Da’Quan Montague, 21, on March 12.
The shooting was the culmination of three days of escalating criminal behavior by Cassell that began with a domestic incident, Assistant Prosecutor Rick McKelvey said during a detention hearing in March.
Cassell was on release from that charge when the shooting happened.

But Cassell’s attorney, Steve Scheffler, said that it was the victim and another man, Tajai Hicks-Anderson, who had come hunting for his client.
Video from outside A.C. Linen, where Cassell worked, shows the defendant on a cigarette break when Montague and Hicks-Anderson approach.
During a scuffle, a shot is fired.
Cassell was indicted on second-degree charges of reckless manslaughter, possession of a firearm without a permit and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Hicks-Anderson, 23, was indicted on a third-degree aggravated assault charge.
The original domestic incident involved the mother of two of Cassell’s children and Hicks–Anderson.
