Galloway mom accused of assaulting toddler refuses to come to court

  • News

UPDATE: Yolanda Torres was sentenced to four years in prison in the assault. She was released Nov. 4, 2020.

A Galloway woman accused of assaulting her 2-year-old daughter refused to come to court Thursday, her attorney told the judge.
Yolanda Torres, 33, is accused of assaulting the little girl last July.
The mother claimed a series of accidents were responsible for the toddler’s multiple bone fractures, brain bleeding and deep burns to her hand and foot.
Attorney John Bjorklund said he would bring the discovery in the case along with transcripts from the grand jury presentation and a plea offer to his client in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
“She’s got some anger issues,” he told Superior Court Judge Ronald Cunningham. “She’s pretty upset.”
The child’s father, 52-year-old Jose Velez, is charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He has applied to recovery court, Bjorklund told the judge.
Torres cannot apply to the former drug court unless one of her charges is amended, Bjorklund said.
