A Pleasantville man is in jail after he allegedly tried to steal a cash register from an Atlantic City convenience store and then attacked a clerk and responding officers.
Police were called to the Food-4-Less just before 5 p.m. Saturday, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
The 44-year-old clerk told Officer Robert Reynolds that a man came in and tried to steal the cash register.
When the worker tried to stop him, the suspect punched him and threatened to kill him, according to the report.
The suspect, Benny Ward, was found in a nearby fast food restaurant, Fair said.
When Reynolds told Ward he was under arrest, Ward attacked the officer, Fair said.
Officers Kevin Dever, Melvin Murray III, and Eric Evans joined Reynolds in attempting to arrest Ward, but were unsuccessful, Fair said.
Ward finally surrendered after K-9 Officer Anthony Grajales-Prado and his partner, Chase, arrived.
During the struggle, Ward ripped one of Reynolds’ shirt pockets off, and his uniform shirt open, Fair says.
There were no injuries in the incident, Fair said.
Ward, 31, is charged with robbery, theft, terroristic threats, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice, and resisting arrest.
He was being held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
