State Police asking for new help in 40-year-old murder case

  • News
New Jersey State Police are asking for  after evidence was resubmitted in a grisly 40-year-old murder case. The brutal killing of the Deal family inside their Folsom home sent shock waves through the community. Gary Deal, 26, was found Oct. 30, 1978, lying near the front door of his Mays Landing Road home. His wife, Joan Deal also 26, was found naked on their bedroom floor. Both were shot multiple times in the head, their throats cut. Their 3-year-old son, Jason, was lying on his bed in his pajamas with his throat slashed. Ballistic and DNA evidence originally collected in the case has been resubmitted for additional testing after new technological advances, State Police said.
During the investigation, detectives from the Troop A Criminal Investigation Office, Crime Scene Investigations Unit and Major Crime Unit learned that the last time someone had contact with the family was in the evening of Oct. 26, 1978. Although numerous suspects were developed, no one was ever charged, State Police said. The case has remained under investigation by detectives from the State Police Major Crime/Homicide South Unit throughout the past 40 years. Anyone with information that may help the investigation is asked to contact Detective Mario Nocito of the New Jersey State Police Homicide South Unit at 609-561-1800, ext. 3354.
