Five men who were local Boy Scout leaders in the 1980s are on a list of 52 who had sexual abuse allegations made against them, according to a list two attorneys made public Tuesday, demanding more information be released in these cases.
Allegations ranged from “initiation rites” that included stripping naked and being rolled in sand to the admitted sexual assault of at least three scouts in two different cases, according to documents posted to a database the Los Angeles Times created in 2012, when the so-called “Perversion Files” were first made public.
Attorneys Jeff Anderson and Greg Gianforcaro held a news conference in Newark on Tuesday, hoping to give the issue more attention.
The most recent in the list was former Waretown Boy Scout leader John T. Fitzgerald, of Barnegat, who pleaded guilty in 1990 to sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy scout.
The online documents include letters between Boy Scout leadership and at least one investigation by the Division of Youth and Family Services.
A 1986 DYFS investigation into Vincent W. Glazewski, of Hammonton, found sexual abuse after it was determined he gave six scouts rum and showed them dirty magazines during a Feb. 14, camping trip to Elm, Camden County, the online documents show.
The boys also told investigators that there were naked pictures taken and that a game included dares of kissing Glazewski on the lips.
While the boys each insisted there was no touching, the investigation substantiated sexual abuse based upon the magazines and nudity.
Glazewski pleaded guilty to five counts of fourth-degree endangering the welfare of a child, and was given an 18-month sentence. He had been on probation for similar crimes at the time, but background checks were not allowed for the volunteers, according to the documents.
Charles Paul Geiger, a trooper leader in Egg Harbor Township, wound up sentenced to six years at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenel, Middlesex County, after admitting to sexually abusing minors in 1987.
His Boy Scouts registration listed the then-Pleasantville resident as a teacher.
Angelo Dellomo, of Mays Landing, also listed his occupation as a teacher. His registration with Troop 6 in Atlantic City was suspended after he failed to answer questions that included whether he had boys go into a bathroom, weigh themselves naked and then perform a “balance exercise” that included being blindfolded with their legs spread apart.
Egg Harbor City volunteer William A. Chiappini and another man who is not on the newly released list allegedly used things like stripping the boys down and rolling them in sand as initiation rites in 1988.
The two were suspended letters show, but it appears they were allowed to remain on a probationary basis after a letter indicated concerns about a lawsuit.
