Atlantic City police to enforce juvenile curfew

  • News

Atlantic City police will be cracking down on juveniles out past curfew amid growing violence among teens.
The Juvenile Curfew Act adopted in 2006, does not allow juveniles out from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., unless accompanied by a parent.
When it was first enacted, "there had been an increase in juvenile violence, juvenile gang activity and crimes being committed by persons under the age of 18 years old," Sgt. Kevin Fair said. "Unfortunately, the same can be said today. With the recent violence in Atlantic City against our youth and committed by our youth, it is time that we take action."
Three teens have been killed in shootings this year, with two teens charged with murder. Several teens have also been wounded in shootings.
Police will be stopping any juveniles out past 10 p.m., Fair said.
Those in violation will be brought back to the Public Safety Building, and a parent or guardian will be notified.
Violators and their parent can be issued summonses, which carry fines of as much as $1,000 and community service.
Exceptions to the ordinance include emergencies and coming home from work.
"The purpose of the enforcement is simple," Fair said. "We want to eliminate potential victims that are hanging out on the street with no purpose. Many of our violent crimes take place after 10 p.m. If we can eliminate potential victims, we can reduce the number of crimes that take place throughout our city."
The goal is to keep Atlantic City's children safe.
