Two arrested in Atlantic City shootout

  • News

Two men have been arrested in an Atlantic City shooting, including one who was wounded by gunfire.
Police responded to Sovereign and Fairmount avenues at just before 4 a.m. June 1 for a ShotSpotter alert.
There was evidence of gunfire, but no victim.
About an hour later, Anthony Allen Jr. walked in to Shore Medical Center in Somers Point with a gunshot wound, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
During the investigation detectives with the Violent Crimes unit found that Allen and another man, Damond Whealton, got into a dispute at Proud Mary's. Both left the bar, and exchanged gunfire, according to the charges.
Criminal charges were filed against both men, and warrants were issued for their arrests.
Allen, 31, of Pleasantville, was arrested Thursday, Fair said.
Whealton, 25, of Atlantic City, was arrested Sunday.
Both are charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and certain person not to possess a weapon.
Allen has been wounded by gunfire several times, including three times in 2014, when he was also jailed on drug charges.
He was shot in the hand in a shooting in Philadelphia last year that killed his friend, Antonio Williams.
