No deal yet for Ventnor woman accused of killing mom, grandmother

  • News

The attorneys for a Ventnor woman accused of killing her mother and grandmother will move to have the statement she gave investigators thrown out.
Heather Barbera, 42, is accused of fatally beating her mother and grandmother inside the Vassar Square condominium they shared July 7, 2018.
She then fled and was later arrested in New York.
A trial date has been set for Oct. 8, but the defense had been given until Monday for a plea.
But while attorney James Leonard Jr. has said he believes the case will resolve without going to trial, the two sides do not appear near an agreement on the time Barbera should face.
If she goes to trial and is convicted, Barbera would face a potential of consecutive life sentences. Murder carries a penalty of 30 years to life.
Leonard’s associate and brother, Matthew Leonard, appeared in court for Barbera on Monday. At that time, he notified Superior Court Judge Bernard DeLury.
A briefing schedule is expected to come later.
“It’s a very complex case with several moving pieces,” James Leonard said after the brief hearing. “Both sides are working on an appropriate resolution.”
