Father dies trying to save son from drowning in Atlantic City

  • News

A Pennsylvania man drowned trying to save his son who was struggling in the water off an Atlantic City beach.
First responders were called to the beach at New Jersey Avenue just after 9:30 a.m., for a child drowning and his father going into the water to rescue him, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
The 11-year-old boy was able to make it to shore, according to the report.
But his father, later identified as 58-year-old Thanh Bui of Reading, Pa., was still struggling in the water.
A former police officer from Amsterdam, N.Y., saw Bui and went in after him with a boogie board, Fair said.
Jim Glorioso Jr. got to the father and tried to get him on to the board. Atlantic City Beach Patrol Chief Steve Downey got to both men first, followed by members of the Fire Department.
The men were assisted to shore, but the father was not responsive, Fair said.
Firefighters immediately began CPR. He was then taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus, where he died.
The child was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
Lifeguards were not on duty at the time of the incident.
