An Atlantic City 12-year-old was arrested after he allegedly stole his grandparents’ car and then was involved in a hit-and-run.
Officers were called to the area of Massachusetts and Mediterranean avenues just before 7 p.m. Wednesday for a hit-and-run, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
They found a vehicle with extensive damage, according to the report. The driver — a 20-year-old man from Mays Landing— was injured.
He told police he was struck by a Chevrolet Cruze that fled the scene, leaving behind the license plate, Fair said.
The driver was take to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus.
Before the crash, police received several calls about a car being driven erratically by what appeared to be a juvenile driver, but were unable to locate it, Fair said.
After the crash, officers went to the home of the wanted car’s registered owner and learned that the 12-year-old had taken the keys and stole the vehicle, according to the report.
The juvenile was charged with taking of means of conveyance and numerous motor vehicle violations.
The juvenile, who was not injured in the crash, was left in the custody of his grandparents.
