Suicidal man arrested after biting Lower Township officer

  • News

A man who allegedly came to police to have them shoot him wound up arrested for biting an officer.
Lower Township police got a 911 saying a man was outside the Public Safety Building asking for an officer to come outside and shoot him, according to the report.
Brian Doherty Jr. was found in the police station’s parking lot holding a large butterfly-style knife demanding that officers shoot him, police said.
Doherty refused to drop the knife, so police deployed a conducted energy device — commonly known as a taser — which had no effect.
After several minutes, officers were able to talk Doherty into turning over the knife, police said.
As officers tried to take him into custody, he struggled and an officer was bitten several times.
Doherty sustained a small scrape to his forehead as he was taken in to custody.
The officer was evaluated, treated and released.
Doherty was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.
He is currently in custody awaiting further adjudication.
