Jacqueline Hoyle had an unbreakable spirit and a smile that lit up everyone around her, those who loved her said.
But in Dec. 30, 2016, her estranged boyfriend extinguished that light in a violent attack that ended with him leaving her shot and bleeding on the floor of the Atlantic City home they once shared.
Joseph McCoy, 45, was sentenced to 50 years in prison for murder Thursday. He would have to serve at least 85 percent before he is eligible for parole.
While Hoyle's family spoke of the deep and permanent hole Hoyle's killing left in their lives, McCoy sat at the defense table with his head back, eyes closed much of the time.

When he had his turn to speak, he made no mention of the woman he once allegedly loved.
Instead, he painted himself as a victim of the legal system and insisted he will appeal his conviction and sentencing.
McCoy "has lived a life of crime and unemployment," Judge Donna Taylor said before sentencing him.
He had 12 adult children, but his side of the courtroom was empty as he was given what likely will amount to a life sentence.
