Dunston chosen to fill vacant Second Ward Atlantic City council seat

  • News

Atlantic City has a new face in city government.
LaToya Dunston was chosen by City Council on Tuesday night to fill the Second Ward seat left vacant when Marty Small took over as mayor.
Because former Mayor Frank Gilliam stepped down so close to the election, there was not enough time to take Small's name off the ballot.
He ran unopposed.
The Atlantic City Democratic Committee gave the council three people to choose from. Dunston was the only woman.
She thanked the council and committee for their "vote of confidence."
"I'm excited to continue to serve my city in this new position," Dunston said. "I promise to serve with dignity and integrity. It won't be easy. I just ask everyone to bear with me, this is something new. But I've been serving the community for quite some time now."
Dunston has been a longtime advocate for the city's youth, starting the Xclusive Drill Team more than a decade ago.
Before Tuesday night's meeting, Dunston told BreakingAC that — if elected — her only focus would be on doing what's best for the city.
