  • News

The man who successfully prosecuted the Kauffman drug-trafficking and murder case has been awarded for his efforts, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner announced Tuesday.Atlantic County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Seth Levy was honored for Outstanding Advocacy in a Single Case for the 2018 case that involved wire taps, a drug ring and the killing of a beloved veterans advocate whose husband is said to have killed himself inside his jail cell after being charged with murder.Ferdinand “Freddy” Augello was convicted last year of orchestrating the May 10, 2012 murder May 10, of April Kauffman inside her Linwood home. The case remained mostly cold until her widower, Dr. James Kauffman, was arrested after pulling a gun when authorities came to his Egg Harbor Township office with a search warrant that included an investigation into another case.Eight people were arrested for their part in the drug case. The doctor later was found dead in his Hudson County jail cell of an apparent suicide. The rest took plea deals and testified against Augello. The state’s star witness, Andrew Glick, was never charged in the case, despite saying he had firsthand knowledge of both the drug case and the killing. He had drug and gun charges fully dismissed for his efforts. Tyner said he was “elated” to announce Levy’s award.“Seth and the entire team of investigators, lawyers, clerical staff and many others overcame many obstacles to develop this case, get it trial ready and bring it to a jury for a successful conviction,” Tyner said.
