A Margate man admitted he embezzled more than a half-million dollars from his Northfield business and used the money to gamble, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said.
Barry Markman, 62, was a partial owner in the company that sold and installed shutters, shades and blinds to retail customers.
The company is not named in the complaint, but Markman lists his employment as Wallace Blinds on his Facebook. His LinkedIn shows him as the company’s president since 1982.
Markman admitted Wednesday that between 2012 and 2016, he took checks customers wrote and deposited them in his personal bank account.
He then failed to include that $618,002 he received on his subsequent income taxes, for a total of $170,704 in taxes.
Markman faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced, which is scheduled for Dec. 6.
