An Atlantic City man was tasered after an hours-long standoff with Florida police that caused the evacuation of a Daytona Beach hotel Saturday.
David B. Allen, 45, faces numerous charges in the incident at the Ocean Breeze Club, according to a news release.
He was lured out with the promise of a can of soda about 5½ hours after the standoff began.
"There was Taser deployment during the takedown," police said.
Police were called to the beachside hotel at about 7:30 a.m. for a man making suicidal threats and throwing furniture onto the balcony of the fifth-floor hotel room where he was staying.
The hotel was evacuated after witnesses said Allen had a grenade.
Drone footage from the Daytona Beach Police Department's Unmanned Aviation Unit confirmed that the grenade was not operational, police said.
Because hostage negotiators had difficulty communicating with Allen over the phone, a public address system was used during the standoff.
Initial information that Allen had a woman held hostage proved untrue, police said.
At various points, Allen refused to leave his room and threatened to detonate the grenade if officers tried to force their way inside.
He was lured out at about 1 p.m., police said.
Units with Volusia County Beach Safety and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad assisted Daytona Beach police.
