Kitchen fire displaces Atlantic City resident

  • News

Firefighters battled a kitchen fire that spread throughout an apartment Friday in Atlantic City.
The call came in just before 11 a.m. in the 1900 block of Columbia Avenue, Fire Chief Scott Evans said.
Firefighters from Engine 3 arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming out of the front windows, Evans said. The fire quickly spread from the kitchen to the living room and dining room, and into the outside of the building to the second-floor eaves and roof, the chief said.
The person in the first-floor apartment self-evacuated.
Firefighters cleared the second floor, which was not occupied.
About 30 firefighters responded, including three fire engines, a ladder truck, one rescue truck, three chiefs and support personnel.
The fire was contained to the first-floor apartment. The resident was able to relocate with family, Evans said.
The cause of the fire was unattended cooking, Evans said.
