Atlantic City shoplifting suspect arrested after coughing on police

  • News

An Atlantic City on probation for theft is now jailed after allegedly coughing on officers who tried to arrest him for shoplifting.
Police were called to the CVS on Atlantic Avenue on Wednesday for a report of shoplifting, state officials said.
When officers approached Jason Reiner, he began to act erratically and said he was on drugs, according to the report.
Emergency services were called, but Reiner refused treatment, the report said.
As officers tried to arrest him, he allegedly resisted and intentionally coughed on officers repeatedly to spread germs and obstruct his arrest.
Reiner, 44, was sentenced to five years' probation in September in connection with a string of thefts in March 2019.
Reiner was jailed last year after six arrests in six days, including two in one day.
He pleaded guilty to one count of theft by unlawful taking and was sentenced in September, court records show.
He is now in the Atlantic County Justice Facility on charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, shoplifting, resisting arrest, obstruction and violating the emergency order.
