About 100 part-time Atlantic Cape Community College employees will be put on temporary hiatus starting early next month. “We tried to maintain full staffing for as long as possible to avoid a move like this, but, like educational institutions across the country, Atlantic Cape is significantly financially impacted as a result of the pandemic,” college President Dr. Barbara Gaba said.
The jobs affected are those that cannot be done from home in light of the stay-at-home order due to COVID-19, the college announced Tuesday. With classes entirely online, most of the jobs are those that cannot be performed without students on campus. ACCC has 749 employees across its three campuses: Mays Landing, Cape May Court House and Atlantic City. The economic impact of COVID-19 on the state’s budget has resulted in a decrease of operating aid to all community colleges for the remainder of the fiscal year.
The affected employees will be eligible to apply for unemployment.
The college is not filling any open positions, and only "most urgent and essential items" will be purchased.
