An off-duty EMT who rescued a woman from a burning car last month was honored by Atlantic City police Tuesday for her life-saving efforts.
Angela Nichols was heading to work at Exceptional Medical Transportation when she saw the car in the middle of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and smelled smoke.
While others tried unsuccessfully to get the driver out, Nichols went to her car and retrieved a window punch to break the glass.
The group was then able to get the woman clear of the burning vehicle, and Nichols rendered aid until an ambulance team arrived.
“I’m glad I was at the right place at the right time,” the Absecon resident told BreakingAC at the time. “Honestly, I didn’t even think twice, I just knew it was something I had to do. I had to save somebody’s life. That’s what I had to do.”
Deputy Chief Bridget Pierce presented Nichols with a commendation for her actions Tuesday.
"Her selfless actions and disregard for her own personal safety may have saved the crash victim's life," Pierce said.
