Atlantic City is cracking down on Airbnbs after numerous complaints about these properties.
An investigation by a private company found 700 properties in the city acting in this capacity. The city didn't know about approximately 615 of those, Mayor Marty Small said.
New regulations include an application fee, along with occupancy limits of 16 and no one younger than 21 able to rent.
Those who want to rent out their property must pay $150 application fee.
In addition, rather than the previous $300 per season cost, the city will charge annual fees.
Those renting to groups of eight people or less will pay $2,000 per year. For groups of nine to 16, the cost will be $2,400.
Small said they also are invoking a two-strike rule for any properties with issues.
"This ain't baseball," he said. "It's not three strikes your out. We have two strikes."
BreakingAC has learned of problems at several properties: some rented under Airbnb, while others are VRBO, or vacation rentals by owner.
One VRBO property was the site of a home invasion and rape last month. Atlantic City police did not put out a release to the media and public about the incident
BreakingAC reported it a month later, after obtaining information through multiple public records requests.
