A.C. officer's busy shift includes attempted murder suspect, felon with stolen guns

  • News

An Atlantic City man wanted in two shootings and another found with stolen guns were among three arrests by one officer during a busy overnight shift, police said.
Officer Aaron Jones had just started work at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, when he recognized a suspect in two shootings that each left someone wounded, Lt. Kevin Fair said.
Randy Acosta, 32, of Philadelphia, is charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault in the shootings that included one Monday on the beach block of Tennessee Avenue.
No details have been released on the second, that happened Wednesday, according to the information released.
Acosta, who is currently serving five years' probation stemming from a drug case plea last year, was arrested without incident, according to the report.
He was also found with 14 grams of marijuana, Fair said.
Officer Jones made two arrests a few hours later, after he stopped a vehicle at North Carolina and Mediterranean avenues, Fair said.
Dionisio Torres was driving, but does not have a valid driver's license, according to the report.
After Jones smelled unburnt marijuana, Torres and his passenger were told to get out of the vehicle.
The passenger, Winerd Prevard, was then found with a handgun in his waistband and another in a fanny pack, Fair said.
Both guns were reported stolen from Franklin Township.
Prevard, 27, of Atlantic City, was sentenced last year in a case where he came to the door with a gun while police were investigating a hit-and-run.
He pleaded guilty to a fourth-degree possession of prohibited weapon, large capacity ammunition, and was given a suspended sentence after a 548-day stay at the Atlantic County Justice Facility while awaiting the case's outcome.
Torres, 23, of Atlantic City, was found with 200 bags of heroin and a small amount of marijuana, Fair said.
He was sentenced to three years' probation in a drug case last year.
Acosta and Prevard are in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
Torres was released on a summons.
