Feb. 27th:
If your tastebuds have a penchant for dishes with a little kick ... then giddyup, because it's National Chili Day!
No, there is no law that says chili HAS to be spicy, but if you ask most people from Texas (where chili is said to have originated) they'll tell you to bring the heat! Fortunately for lightweights like myself, there are plenty of milder varieties to satisfy even the most delicate palate. If you're going to make it true Texas style, however, you will have to forgo the beans. The Lonestar State is famous for its chili con carne that puts an emphasis on the meat, while holding the beans.
While the jury may be out on which variety Americans prefer, there's no denying that Texans do know their chili - it's been their official "state food" since 1977, but that doesn't mean you can't throw in a few beans if you're so inclined. We won't tell. Happy National Chili Day!
