Ocean County man gets jail in dog's heat stroke death

An Ocean County man was sentenced to 270 days in jail and four years' probation after leaving his dog outside on a balcony for hours in 97-plus degrees.Jonathon Correa, 31, left 13-month-old Princess unattended for hours on his Brick townhouse balcony July 1, 2018, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said.Several neighbors saw the pit bull in distress and called Brick Township police.The dog was taken to Emergency Veterinary Service, but died from complications from heat stroke, Billhimer said.As part of the plea, Correa cannot own any animals while on probation and must perform 180 hours of community service, the maximum allowed by law, Billhimer said.He also must repay $1,735 in veterinary bills incurred by the Township.
