The Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior not only had a dream to end segregation and see every man, woman, and child viewed as equal, regardless of the color of their skin - he also dreamed of a world where everyone realized the power they possessed with being able to give back to their communities. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, where everyone is encouraged to do what they can to make an impact in the world around them.
“Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve.”
- Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Day has been recognized as a national holiday since 1986 and a "Day of Service" since legislation was passed in 1994. While many offices and schools are closed for the commemoration, millions of people across the country are using the 2020 holiday not as a day off, but a day "on" dedicated to community service.
There are so many ways to give back, whether it's volunteering at your local soup kitchen, stocking shelves at a food pantry, doing odd jobs for a friend or neighbor in need, or even spending a few hours mentoring a child.
A quick search of area non profits is a great place to start if you’re looking for places where your talents can be of use. Needs are all around us, just open your eyes and see where your heart takes you ... not just on America’s Day of Service, but all year long - even if it’s a few hours of your time. Sometimes the smallest of acts can have a big impact.
“If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.“
- Martin Luther King Jr.
