Margate man released to home confinement in father's beating

  • News

A Margate man accused of brutally beating his father with a golf club will be released with home confinement.
Robert Woods Jr., 45, is accused of attacking legendary local baseball coach Bobby Woods inside the Margate home they shared.
The father and son "got along famously" and he had no motive to attack his father, defense attorney Mark Roddy said at a detention hearing Thursday.
The victim does not remember the incident and there is no video or evidence beyond a pair of bloody pants linking Woods Jr. to the crime, Roddy said.
The defendant's 70-year-old father was found bloody and beaten in his own bed with the alleged weapon found outside the bedroom.
Downstairs was a pair of bloody pants that Wood Jr.'s former girlfriend identified as belonging to him.
Woods Sr. is currently hospitalized but improving.
The state's attempt to detain Woods Jr. was hindered by a public safety assessment that put him at low risk. The assessment, under bail reform, measures defendants on a scale of one to six in two different categories: failure to appear and likelihood to re-offend.
Woods Jr., who has no criminal history, scored a 1 and 1, the lowest possible score.
While the recommendation was for release with just monthly reporting, Superior Court Judge Donna Taylor added conditions, including an ankle monitor and house arrest.
She was also given a list of family members who want a no-contact order.
Woods Jr. will stay in Egg Harbor Township with his mother, Jean Santarelli, and her husband.
He will be on electronic monitoring and only able to leave for pre-approved appointments and monthly in-person reporting to the court. He also must report by phone once a month.
