The teen accused of killing a Ventnor grandfather in 2018, will be detained pending trial.
But where Angelo Delgado will be held is still in question.
Delgado was 16 when he allegedly shot and killed 61-year-old Sunil Edla outside the man’s North Nashville Avenue home Nov. 15, 2018.
The teen was arrested in Atlantic City the next day, after Edla’s stolen SUV was found there and the city’s Surveillance Center personnel tracked Delgado to a home a block away.
He appeared before Superior Court Judge Bernard DeLury for a detention hearing Thursday via video. Technical issues kept the video stream from properly playing on the public website.
While DeLury ordered Delgado detained, it’s still not clear where that detention will be.
Juvenile defendants who are being tried as adults can stay in juvenile detention centers, unless a motion is made by the state to move them into the adult jail.
But in this case, the defense requested that Delgado be moved to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
It was not clear why that request was made.
The judge asked the Prosecutor’s Office to take the request up for review.
If it’s agreed, Delgado would be transferred to the county jail.
Delgado had just been paroled from an 18-month sentence at the Training School for Boys when he fled a required program in Vineland, and ended up in Ventnor with a gun and “an elaborate and sophisticated scheme to steal a car,” according to the appellate judges’ summary of the state’s case.
A .22 caliber handgun was found in the Atlantic City home where Delgado was arrested, according to the details of the case.
NOTE: Issues with the public stream of the court hearing meant no photo could be taken of the suspect.
