The death of an inmate at the Atlantic County Justice Facility is under investigation, a county spokeswoman told BreakingAC.
"An inmate (this week) was taken to the hospital, where he died," county spokeswoman Linda Gilmore said. "His death is now being investigated by the Prosecutor's Office, as per protocol."
The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office did not respond to requests for comment.
Gilmore did not give an exact date, confirming only that it happened earlier this week.
It is the second death inside the jail in the past six months.
Mario Terruso Jr. was pronounced dead at 1 a.m. Sept. 16, 2019, after he was taken from the jail to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s Mainland Campus in Galloway Township.
A friend claimed he witnessed Terruso pleading for help from corrections officers, but instead was belittled, tied up and punched before he wound up dead.
But a statement released by the unions who represent these officers insisted no wrongdoing would be found.
That death is under investigation by the Attorney General's Office.
