  • Government

Atlantic City is shortening city employees' workweek and limiting public access to City Hall to just two hours a week, the mayor announced Monday.City government operations will be limited to 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Mayor Marty Small said during a news conference. The decision was made both to limit gatherings of more than 10 people as a precaution against the coronavirus, and also to allow those who care for children to be home with those students now learning remotely.Employees will still receive their full salaries, he said. The public will have access to City Hall only from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursdays, Small said.During those two hours, the public will still have only limited access to City Hall. That will be until April 20, when students are due back to school.

Timing could change, depending on updates with COVID-19.

"The city of Atlantic City is taking this very seriously," Small said.He noted that, although Atlantic City has not had a confirmed case, that there are those who could be walking around infected without knowing it.All recreational activities are canceled, along with senior home activities.Small is making plans to have residents at all non-Housing Authority senior homes checked. The Atlantic City Aquarium will be closed, although the animals will be taken care of, Small said. Those whose tax bills are due May 1 will get a 30-day extension.
