Police are investigating after a Galloway Township teen’s use of a racial slur apparently sparked death threats and fake accounts.
“I f------- hate n-----s,” the teen says after stating her full name in the short clip posted on TikTok last week.
The teen, whose father is former Galloway Mayor Don Purdy, did not release the clip herself, she said in an apology posted later.
The Absegami High School student said it was part of a group of friends re-enacting a Chris Rock skit.
“I didn’t think about it in any racial or offensive way because Chris Rock is African American and so were some of the friends in the video that was not posted,” the teen wrote. “I now realize that even though I never meant it to be anything racial at all seeing only that part of it is exactly how it was taken.”
It is unclear who posted the video, which includes a caption saying, “welcome to absegami.”
Police Chief Donna Higbee confirmed there is an ongoing investigation at the Purdy home, but that she could not comment further since it involves a minor.
The teen’s apology gives some insight into the investigation.
“The fact that people are now making fake accounts and posting things acting as if they are me is very disturbing,” she wrote. “I haven’t posted anything myself so what you see circulating is a fake account that the police are looking into along with many death threats and derogatory name calling about me, which is not helping the situation.”
Purdy said Saturday that he would release a statement, but did not respond to requests about it Sunday.
