Atlantic City man fled with drugs and gun, police say

  • News

An Atlantic City man sentenced to drug court last year allegedly had cocaine and a handgun when he was arrested on a warrant Saturday.
Iree Jones, 27, who has a history of drug offenses, was wanted on a warrant when Detectives Eric Evans and Anthony Abrams saw him in the 1700 block of Atlantic Avenue at about 11 p.m., Lt. Kevin Fair said.
When Evans told Jones he was under arrest, the suspect ran, according to the report.
Jones ran around the block and threw a fanny pack on to the roof of a building, Fair said. A bag containing more than 16 grams of cocaine fell out.
Jones continued to run, but eventually laid down and surrendered, Fair said.
The cocaine was recovered and a digital scale was also located.
A loaded handgun was found in the fanny pack, which the Atlantic City Fire Department helped get from the roof, Fair said.
Jones pleaded into Recovery Court on heroin charges in February 2019, court records show.
He was also arrested in a shooting that wounded two people in 2017, but outcome of that case was unclear.
Jones is now charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, certain person not to possess a weapon, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession with intent to distribute, possession with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public zone, possession of a weapon while committing a CDS offense, possession of narcotic paraphernalia, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice and contempt of court.
He is being held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
