Bridgeton woman free pending trial in stabbing of baby's father

  • News

A Bridgeton woman accused of stabbing her baby's father was released from jail with conditions Friday.
Alyassa McDowell, 20, is accused of stabbing the man in the neck and back Saturday, while in Hammonton, according to the charges.
She then allegedly fled the scene.
When police arrived, they found the victim with deep lacerations to the neck and back. He and witnesses at the scene identified McDowell as his attacker, Assistant Prosecutor Gina DeAunnuntis told judge, adding that witnesses did not know what kind of weapon was used.
The prosecutor cited pending criminal charges — including a separate simple assault — as reasons why McDowell should have been kept in jail.
But defense attorney Mary Linehan noted that she had no information on the pending disorderly persons matter that is in municipal court.
She also noted that McDowell has no criminal history, including as a juvenile.
The woman is certified nurses aide employed by Inspira Hospital and cares for her 5-month-old daughter, who goes to daycare through a low-income program while her mother works.
DeAnnuntis expressed concern to the judge that McDowell has five pending charges in the past year and a half, including a theft out of Delaware.
But Linehan noted that when reached by phone about the stabbing, she turned herself in to police after making sure her daughter was safe in the care of a friend.
"That doesn't bespeak to obstruction or flight," she said.
McDowell was released with conditions that allow her to continue working and caring for her daughter while addressing her legal issues, Judge Rodney Cunningham said.
