Cape man killed in police-involved shooting in Buena Vista

  • News

A Cape May Court House man was fatally shot by police in Buena Vista Township after he allegedly fled a crash in a police car.
The Attorney General’s Office is investigating the shooting that happened just before 3 p.m. Monday in the area of East Oak Road in Buena Vista Township involving a Franklin Township police officer.
The man killed has been identified as Roy Jackel Jr., 41.
A preliminary investigation found that a Franklin Township officer responded to a mutual aid call for a motor vehicle accident at Cumberland and Tuckahoe roads in Buena Vista. Jackel was the driver of one of the vehicles.
When the officer left his police vehicle, Jackel got into it and drove away, officials said.
He then stopped the marked vehicle on East Oak Road.
An encounter at that location led to a Franklin Township officer firing his weapon, fatally wounding Jackel.
Police officers provided medical assistance until emergency medical personnel arrived, according to officials. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer's name has not been released.
The investigation is being conducted under the law that requires the Attorney General’s Office conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody.
The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.
