Atlantic City man held in sexual assault of 5-year-old EHT girl

  • News

An Atlantic City man was ordered held in jail Tuesday in the sexual assault of a 5-year-old girl.
Gerardo Sumano-Zagada, 21, is accused of assaulting the girl during a party at her home in Egg Harbor Township.
Police were called to the home Aug. 14, for the report of a sexual offense, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
The girl's mother told investigators that when she went inside her home to use the restroom, she found her daughter in the woman's bedroom looking upset.
When she asked the girl what was wrong, she told her mother Sumano-Zagada had touched her private area, the affidavit states.
Detectives went to Sumano-Zagada's home on Aug. 18.
He told them he had consumed about four or five beers while at the party, and went into the home to get away from the insects and heat, the affidavit states.
Sumano-Zagada said the girl followed him inside, and then they went into the bedroom together.
He admitted to kneeling down, lifting the girl's dress, putting his hand over her private part and moving her underwear and leg, the affidavit states.
Sumano-Zagada allegedly told the girl not to tell her mother.
When the girl's mother came inside the house, the two were still in her bedroom, so Sumano-Zagada ran into the bathroom to conceal the act, he told investigators, according to the affidavit.
He is charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and endangering.
Superior Court Judge John Rauh ordered Sumano-Zagada held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending the outcome of the case.
