An Atlantic City woman will remain in jail along with the boyfriend she is accused of shooting.
Shawnique Hudson, 33, is accused of shooting Lawrence Oglesby III inside her Caspian Avenue apartment Nov. 18, after he allegedly broke in through a window.
But Oglesby, 32, told police he was shot on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard by an unknown person.
“There is absolutely no probable cause to support the state’s allegations,” Hudson’s attorney, Yvonne Maher, told the judge during a detention hearing last week.
She noted that no shell casings were found at the residence and no weapon recovered either from the home or her client’s Jeep.
Police were called to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus at 6:35 a.m. Nov. 18, after Oglesby, walked into the emergency room with a gunshot wound to the arm, according to the report.
Six minutes later, officers were called to Hudson’s residence in the 1400 block of Caspian Avenue for an apartment door left open.
They found a window had been broken and taped up, a knife on the porch railing, and blood inside.
Police determined the shooting had happened inside the home.
Two neighbors told police they heard glass breaking and yelling around 2 or 2:30 that morning, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
One said she taped up the window but did not call police.
Two or three hours later, she heard yelling again and someone asking, “Where’s my gun?” and a single gunshot, the affidavit states.
Hudson told police the two had argued and she locked out Oglesby, who had been living with her for the past two months.
She said he broke a window to get in and that she ran to the bedroom and pushed a sofa against the door. He then apologized, said he’d pay for the damage, and left, Hudson told police.
Hours later, he called to tell her he had been shot.
But there was no ShotSpotter alert, the affidavit notes.
Maher said the second witness told police no gunshot was heard at the apartment either.
At about 4:30 that afternoon, Hudson was found lying with Oglesby in his hospital bed.
“When asked why she is laying in bed with him after the earlier events, she laughed and stated she loved him,” the detective wrote in the affidavit.
Hudson is charged with aggravated assault and weapons offenses.
She already had pending charges out of New York for custodial interference and grand larceny, Assistant Prosecutor Nicole Campellone told the judge.
In 2019, Hudson was also wanted in West Virginia for allegedly brandishing a gun at someone. Police there did not return requests seeking an update in that case.
Oglesby is charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief.
His defense attorney noted that it’s unusual to hold someone on such a charge.
“I think police have other motives to hold (him),” Tom Rossell told the judge.
But Oglesby’s criminal history, which includes four domestic violence instances with three different women including Hudson, was enough for the judge to detain him.
