Good Samaritan killed aiding Atlantic City crash victim

  • News

"My new grandson. Can't wait to hold him," Tereasa Callaway wrote on Facebook two days ago.
But the proud grandmother never had a chance to meet the newborn who lives in Georgia.
Callaway, 57, died Wednesday night, after she and her husband stopped to help after seeing an overturned vehicle in the eastbound lane of Route 30 in Atlantic City near Delilah Road.
The Pleasantville woman and her husband, David, were among a group who rushed to the woman's aid after a first crash on Route 30 in Atlantic City.
Ken Shiles said he and two younger men were pulling the woman inside out of the vehicle when another car came.
Callaway was behind them, he said.
Shiles said he believes the Callaways were helping slow traffic when it happened. He didn't see Tereasa until the other car was coming.
"We all ran to get out of the road," Shiles told BreakingAC. "She wasn't fast enough when the car was coming."
Police responded to the scene at mile marker 55 at 9:48 p.m. for a motor vehicle crash, Lt. Kevin Fair said.
An investigation found that a Jeep driven by a 35-year-old Atlantic City woman struck the center media and became disabled in the left lane of travel, according to the report.
A 19-year-old city woman driving a Toyota Camry then approached the crash, lost control, striking the Jeep and Callaway, Fair said.
Callaway died at the scene.
Both drivers, whose name were not released, were taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening, Fair said.
Callaway and her husband, David Callaway, were heading to Brigantine to pick up their daughter when they came across the overturned vehicle, Craig Callaway said of his brother and sister-in-law.
The two just had two new grandsons. One Tereasa got to hold, another Facebook photo from June 27 shows.
The other lives in Georgia.
Tereasa Callaway would always help someone, her brother-in-law of 35-plus years said.
"She would do it again," he said, "and never even thought about her own safety."
The cause of the crash remains under investigation with assistance from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
The Atlantic City Fire Department, Absecon Fire Department, Absecon Police Department, Pleasantville Police Department and New Jersey Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
The road was closed for about four hours, Fair said.
