Cape man charged with attempted murder in assault with 2-by-4

A Rio Grande man is in jail after he allegedly attacked another man with a piece of wood with a nail in it.
Police were called to the Village Shoppes in the Rio Grande section of Middle Township at about 10:27 a.m. last Saturday.
Michael Rugg and Calvin Billingsly got into a verbal argument, and then Rugg struck Billingsly with a two-by-four, according to an investigation by the Middle Township Major Crimes Unit.
A bystander intervened to stop the assault from escalating further, police said.
Rugg, 19, was seen leaving the area and resisted arrest, according to the report.
He was ultimately sent to police headquarters.
Rugg is charged with attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault, fourth-degree aggravated assault andtwo counts of third-degree aggravated assault, along with weapon offenses, terroristic threats and resisting.
Rugg is in the Cape May County Correctional Facility.
