Firefighters rescued two people from a fire in an Atlantic City motel that is undergoing renovations.
A passerby reported the fire a the Burgundy Motor Inn at 7:12 Sunday morning, Deputy Chief Thomas Culleny said.
The motel at 118 S. North Carolina Avenue is supposed to be vacant.
Battalion Chief Elwood Faunce quickly declared a working fire on the second floor.
He sent companies to Room 115 on the second floor, where there was heavy fire and smoke could be seen coming out of the front window and door, Culleny said.
Capt. Robert Gragg of Engine 1, Assistant Capt. Brian Maise of Engine 7 and Capt. Martin Basso of Ladder gained access to the second floor from the Chalfonte Avenue side, and placed two lines in service, according to the report.
At the same time, Capt. Kyle Pollock and his Rescue 1 crew used a 28-foot ground ladder to remove two trapped people from the North Carolina Avenue side of the building, Culleny said.
The fire was contained to the room of origin and brought under control in less than 20 minutes.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
No injuries were reported.
Six companies and three commanders were on the scene.
