An Ocean County woman who admitted to abandoning three dogs who then died was sentenced to probation Friday.
Allissa DeStefano, 30, of Toms River, must also perform 60 days of community service and is prevented from ever owning animals again, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said.
Lacey Township police were called to a township home Nov. 11, 2019, for the report that dogs may have been left in the vacant residence, Billhimer previously said.
When police arrived, they found evidence the residence was abandoned, along with remains of three dogs.
DeStefano was later arrested without incident.
The state argued for her to serve 364 days in the county jail as a condition of her probation.
Instead, she was given two years’ probation by Judge Rochelle Gizinski.
Billhimer lauded “the diligent efforts” of Assistant Prosecutor Kimberly Carr, along with the Prosecutor’s Office Animal Cruelty Squad and Lacey Township police.
